There is just over a week to go until the Saltburn Food Festival on Sunday July 28th.
Here, Lorna Jackson shares seven good reasons to visit!
This free event has plenty to offer for all the family, whether you’re looking to pick up some tasty treats or to enjoy a day of eating and drinking while you’re out and being entertained by prestigious local chefs at our interactive food theatre.
There’s something for everyone at the festival – and it’s not all about the food and drink – although that’s obviously a huge part of it!
It’s famous – and set in a beautiful location!
Ever since the success of the gothic thriller Saltburn, this quaint, Victorian North Yorkshire seaside town has sparked national intrigue! A trip to Saltburn Food Festival will help you discover the real Saltburn, with its love of real food and drink to tantalise the tastebuds! Beautiful Saltburn is famous for its cliffs and coastal scenery so combine some much-needed summer sea air with foodie treats, enjoy a seaside tipple – or treat yourself to both!
Support local food and drink producers.
At Saltburn Food Festival, we’re all about sustainability and cutting down on your food miles to support local farmers and producers. That’s why we have a wide range of stalls featuring producers from across the region, making everything including cheese and bread, pies and doughnuts and craft ale, gin and wine! While the produce is local, the wide range of food on offer is truly global, with Indian food, Turkish food, Sushi, Greek, Italian and Spanish food just some of the international influences represented in the form of delicious locally made delicacies. There really is something to suit every palate!
Enjoy a spot of food theatre!
Every hour from 10.30am to 4.30pm, a different chef is set to take to the stage to show you how to cook up a storm in your own kitchen! The theatre events, hosted by MC Irene Myers, will include Ian Munro from the Velveteen Rabbit Luncheon Club in Great Ayton, Martin Jones, owner of the Truffled Hog in Stokesley, Adam Maddock, head chef, at Saltmoore, Sandsend, Whitby, Kath Breckon, a multi award winning training and development chef from North Yorkshire County Council, Jon Appleby, Head Chef at the Feversham Arms, Helmsley and Ed Trewhitt, master baker of Brickyard Bakery and Academy, Guisborough.
It’s so easy to get there
With a regular train service – and park and ride facilities set up around Redcar and Cleveland especially for the day – you can easily avoid traffic and parking in Saltburn itself. There will be a bus to Saltburn every 15 minutes from the coach car

park in Guisborough and also buses every 15 minutes from The Hob Hill car park in Saltburn, though this fills up very quickly. Guisborough has got lots of car parking spaces available so it’s best to head there and get one of the park and ride buses. There is also a bus service through Ings Estate and Marske in Redcar every thirty minutes, which also takes in Skelton and Brotton. Freeborough Academy open their car park in Brotton and you can park there and catch the bus from Laburnum Road. The train to Saltburn enables you to travel right into the heart of the food festival from as far afield as Hexham and Newcastle, as well as Middlesbrough. Disabled parking facilities are available in Saltburn’s Sainsbury’s car park and all the buses and trains are suitable for wheelchair users.
It’s not all about the food and drink!
Music and dancing, a spot of shopping and supporting local charities who will be there to talk to you about their great work are all on the cards too! Expect street performers and craft stalls, charity stalls and some of the local shops sprawling out into the festival. Fat Rabbit Crafts, which creates wooden chopping and serving boards from locally sourced trees is just one of the delightful gems you can expect to find. Fairtrade fashion will be on offer from Earthstore Boutique, which will extend its shop outdoors with rails to peruse through at your leisure – you might even pick up a one-off piece of beautiful clothing and jewellery! Meanwhile, local charities including the RNLI, Mountain Rescue, The Dogs’ Trust and WWF will also be represented.
Have a go at one of the interactive cookery workshops.
Bookings are being taken for a number of cookery workshops, so why not learn to create a whole new dish? A Turkish Baklava Class with Rosalind’s Larder is just £20 for adults or £12.50 for under 18s and will be taking place at 11am. To book, email rosal09@hotmail.co.uk
Soosh Sushi School is also coming to Saltburn Food Festival on Sunday July 28th 2024! In this fun one and a half hour class, you’ll learn three different roll variations with lots of delicious fillings to choose from. This class is suitable for ages 3+ and is also able to cater for vegetarians, pescatarians and vegans – just make a note of any dietary requirements when booking. You’ll walk away with a big box full of your own creations too! Classes are available to book online for 10am, 12:30pm and 3pm.
Ed Trewhitt, left, will also be demonstrating his baking skills!
Enjoy the chance to be a volunteer for the day.
Saltburn Food Festival is also looking for volunteers to help out on the day. Volunteers are needed from 6am to 7pm to help set up and then take down the event. Without volunteers, the event wouldn’t be possible so we’re looking for people who can bring a welcoming smile and a can-do attitude. Visit the Tees Valley Festivals Volunteering page for more information and to apply.
We can think of many more reasons to visit, so keep an eye on the Saltburn Food Festival Facebook page for more details of what is to come,
