SASS media has appointed Abbie Heath as a multimedia creative following a successful collaboration on The NetWORKer Junior magazine during her internship with NetWORK NotWORK CIC.
Abbie joined forces with SASS founders Sarah Dale and Sarah Walker while working on the youth-focused publication and quickly impressed the team with her creativity, writing ability and passion for storytelling.
At just 19 years old, Abbie is already making her mark in the media industry, bringing a fresh perspective, strong creative instincts and a commitment to amplifying young voices and supporting the North-east’s creative community.
Abbie shares her story:
After beginning an internship at NetWORK NotWORK, I got the opportunity to work with Sarah Dale and Sarah Walker on The NetWORKer Junior magazine. I’ve always had a love for writing, from English being one of my favourite projects in school, to studying literature at college, It has always been a creative outlet for me; a way to channel my enthusiasm for the world around me. Seeing this love of mine materialise into a tangible career at 19 is amazing and I am incredibly grateful to SASS for giving me this opportunity. As a creative person, writing is a powerful platform for me, whether that is crafting personal pieces or publishing work for a wider audience.
One of my biggest drives is my passion for the North-east. I am proud of where I come from, particular the vibrant arts and music scene born here. After having friends involved in music in Teesside, I’ve seen first-hand how difficult it is to succeed. Despite the immense talent throughout the North-east, we face a distinct lack of opportunities and lack of funding, which has resulted in a highly challenging landscape for creatives across Teesside and devastatingly causes many loved venues to close their doors. Witnessing these spaces close is tragic, as they have always been the place for local talent to emerge. Losing this means we are losing the opportunities for new musicians to meet, perform and thrive. Therefore, one thing I am looking forward to working on is helping grassroots venues and local, independent businesses thrive by highlighting their impact, as they are always the heart of the community.

Beyond my love for the arts, I am also passionate about youth representation in the media. I often see conversations about younger generations taking place without a young person sitting at the table. This blatantly sidelines the voice of those that matter, making journalism about young people rather than with young people. This often leads to misrepresentations based on assumptions rather than real life experiences. I’d like to work with SASS to bridge that gap. I’d like to use my voice to show other people that they can reject the fear of speaking out, and they can shed light on issues too, regardless of their age.
I’ve already had some amazing opportunities with SASS, being able to visit the Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle for a feature on Vivienne Westwood, someone who I’ve always admired. It was so fun to be able to go to the exhibition and write about a topic I love so much. I have already been given the opportunity to experience what it is like to work as a journalist in my first few weeks. I can’t wait to work more with SASS on exciting new upcoming projects.

Sarah Dale says: “From the moment we met Abbie, we knew she had something special. She brings an incredible energy, creativity and enthusiasm to everything she does, alongside a maturity and professionalism that far exceeds her years. She’s a naturally talented writer with a real gift for storytelling and an instinct for finding the heart of a story. We’re incredibly proud to have her join the SASS team and can’t wait to see where her talent takes her.”
Sarah Walker adds: “As journalists, we’re always looking for people with strong instincts, curiosity and the ability to connect with an audience, and Abbie has all those qualities in abundance. She’s a talented writer who isn’t afraid to ask thoughtful questions, explore different perspectives and give a voice to people who deserve to be heard. She’s brought a real breath of fresh air to the team, and we’re excited to see her flourish as she continues her journey with SASS.”
