Award-winning photography firm Carro Weddings capture moments that last a lifetime

While artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the wedding industry – streamlining planning, speeches and logistics – couples still recognise the value of the unique human touch of professional photography.

UK couples continue to rank wedding photographers as their top supplier, with spend and expectations increasing despite wider adoption of AI tools*.

According to Carro Weddings, based in Wynyard, the reason is trust and the fact that despite advances in AI technology, it can’t replace the human connection vital to capture couples’ most important days of their lives.

“AI is excellent for efficiency, but weddings are about meaning,” explains founder Michael Carruthers.

“What we’re seeing is a premium being placed on human judgement, emotional intelligence and permanence, particularly through physical wedding albums that safeguard memories beyond platforms, clouds or trends. In many ways, AI has reinforced the value of what only people can do.”

When it comes to weddings, everyone talks about the “big day”. But for Carro, it’s not about one day, it’s about everything that comes after. Because long after the music stops and the guests go home, what you’re left with are the moments that were captured properly.

And that’s exactly where Carro Weddings comes in.

Founded in January 2013, the business has grown into one of the UK’s most trusted names in photography, videography and drone coverage – delivering up to 200 weddings a year across the UK and internationally.

Along the way, the team has worked with the likes of the BBC, Channel 4 and the NHS, had photos published in Vogue and a variety of wedding magazines including Belle Bridal and La Di Da, and shot everything from London Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week and Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week to high-end international weddings. Last year, they took 4.1 million images.

Carro Weddings also won Yorkshire Wedding Videographer of the Year in 2025 and scooped second place for Wedding Photographer of the Year.

But strip all that back, and the mission is simple: capture moments that last a lifetime.

Like many great businesses, Carro started with a decision to do something different.

After hitting a ceiling as a supermarket store manager, Michael, from Wynyard, made the leap into self-employment in 2011, driven by a growing passion for photography.

“I enjoyed taking pictures but more than that, I loved the idea of capturing something that would still exist long after the moment had gone,” he says.

“We know how to capture the real moments as they happen. The nerves, the laughter, the speeches, the hugs, and the dancefloor without making your day feel like a photoshoot (unless that’s what you want!).

“Couples love that we keep things calm and comfortable, while still guiding you when needed so we can get the very best from your day without it ever feeling forced.”

Through illness, personal challenges and even hospital stays, the team has never missed a wedding. That consistency has earned them preferred supplier status at more than 50 venues across the region from Northumberland to North Yorkshire, and the kind of trust that can’t be bought.

Carro operates at scale, but never at the expense of detail. Each wedding delivers a minimum of 3,000 carefully colour-corrected images, with options in standard colour, matte and black and white. And crucially, nothing is ever deleted. With more than 6,000 weddings archived across multiple secure locations, couples can recover their memories even years later.

 That is a level of care that reflects how seriously the team takes its role, because these aren’t just photos; they’re family history.

While photography still makes up the majority of Carro’s work, videography is where things get deeply personal. Shot to 4K Netflix and Disney Plus standard, Carro’s films are designed to be immersive and be not just something you watch, but something you feel.

And there’s a reason for that. Michael’s own wedding video was captured while his Dad was terminally ill – a decision that later gave his children the chance to see and hear someone they would otherwise barely remember.

“My daughter remembers him. My son doesn’t,” says Michael, who admits that despite shooting hundreds of wedding videos he has never watched his own.

“But through video, they can still see how he moved, how he smiled, how he was.”

It’s a powerful reminder that while photos capture a moment, video captures a laugh, a walk, a personality.

The wedding industry is changing fast. The rise of content creators and smartphone filming has opened new options, but also new challenges for wedding photographers.

Carro is clear where it stands. While content creators have their place, particularly for behind-the-scenes footage, they’re not built for the demands of a full wedding day. From overheating cameras to limited print quality, the difference becomes clear when it matters most.

And at a time when print is making a major comeback – Michael estimates that album demand has risen from 10% to 90% – quality has never been more important. Put simply: couples want something they can hold and display on their walls, not just scroll past.

What really sets Carro apart isn’t just the kit or experience, although both are expert level, it’s understanding the moment. Every couple completes an in-depth pre-wedding questionnaire, allowing the team to plan meticulously. On the day, everything is designed to be smooth, efficient and, importantly, enjoyable.

Group shots? Done in 10–15 minutes. The rest of the day? Back to celebrating.

“We know people don’t want to spend their wedding posing for hours,” he says. “They want to be with their guests.”

But behind that efficiency is a deeper awareness: weddings are often the only time families come together like this.

“You only really get everyone in one place at weddings and funerals – and people don’t take photos at funerals.”

Which makes these images even more meaningful. In some cases, they may be the last chance to capture certain relationships.

From intimate ceremonies to £300,000 celebrity weddings, Carro has seen it all.

And importantly, every image on their website is real. There are no styled shoots using models; every photo depicts a real wedding.

With AI continuing to disrupt the creative industries, Carro is realistic about the challenges but confident about the future. Technology may improve, but it can’t replicate instinct, emotion or human connection.
